A frustrating issue we get is when we have a client who has good insurance on their own car and gets injured by somebody else, and they rack up $30,000 in bills are adamant that they are not going to get their insurance involved. Well, I have bad news for you. You have no-fault insurance here in Minnesota to cover your medical bills and your wage loss up to $20,000, so if you have $30,000 in medical bills, the other side is expecting to get that as an offset, because that’s what they get in a jury trial.
They are not going to pay you all $30,000. You must get your insurance involved to take care of those bills, otherwise you are just going to be left with a $10,000 recovery towards them and some pain and suffering. The other $20,000 in bills that could easily be paid are still going to be sitting there. You either need to get your insurance involved, because it is the state law, or you need to be willing to pay those out of pocket.
